Feng Shui is the art of rearranging space for positive energy flow. It can turn your bedroom into a room that promotes healthy relaxation and sleep. If your bedroom has good Feng Shui, it helps you relax and go to sleep. The art of Feng Shui was formalized thousands of years ago in China.

“Feng” is the Chinese word for “Wind”, while “Shui” means “Water”. Wind and water are associated with good health and luck in Chinese culture. Good feng shui gives good fortune. On the other hand, bad feng shui can bring misfortune.

Simply put, the art of Feng Shui uses energy forces in order to harmonize people with their environment. If you follow the Feng Shui guidelines, you will be able to make your bedroom more welcoming, making you feel more relaxed and making it easier for you to get that restful sleep you need.

How to Improve Feng Shui in Your Bedroom

By adding in relaxation-related elements and removing some distracting items, you can feng shui your bedroom to make your bedroom a comfortable sleep haven.

Try these 7 simple tips to Feng Shui your bedroom for better sleep.

1.  Reconsider your Bed Placement for good Feng Shui

Your bed should be placed against a solid wall – not under a window – and should have a solid headboard for support. You need to protect your energy while you sleep. If you don’t have the freedom to move your bed much, you should invest in some window treatments to keep your sleeping self safe from the elements.

The Feng Shui bed guidelines require you to have your bed easy to approach from both sides. Ideally, you want to have two bedside tables too. Be sure your bed is in commanding position, such that when you are in bed, you’re facing the door. In addition, you should avoid having your bed in line with the door and avoid the “coffin position” where your feet point out the door.

If possible, don’t place your bed under any low exposed beams and sloped ceilings.

2.  Unplug it All

No doubt you know the benefits of putting your phone down at night, but it’s recommended that you go even further than that. Having a lot of unnatural light in a bedroom promotes unhealthy and restless energy.

Remove computers, TVs, gaming devices, or mobile tablet devices from your bedroom. The bedroom is only for sleeping.  Electronics will have a negative impact on the way you sleep.

Blue light emanated from electronic devices disrupts the body’s circadian rhythm and our sleep-wake cycle.  For simply better sleep, remove – or at least unplug – electronic devices from the bedroom.

3.  Leave Your Work Outside

For good bedroom Feng Shui, your bedroom should be used for sleeping (and having sex). That’s it. You should not keep anything related to work in the bedroom and you should not read your emails or anything like that in bed either.

4.  Let the Bedroom Breathe

Sometimes you have to refresh the air in your room. One of the best ways to do that is to open a window to let in some natural light and a breeze as often as possible.

Or you can use an air purifier to keep the air quality as good as possible.

5.  Clear Out the Space Under Your Bed

Most of us keep things under our bed, and that is not advised when it comes to Feng Shui. One of the key principles of the practice is that the Chi life force energy should be allowed to move freely. Having lots of stuff under your bed prevents the energy from moving freely as it should. Clear out under your bed.

Declutter other areas of your bedroom for better sleep. Keep the insides of your closets and your dresser drawers tidy.  Periodically, go over your wardrobe and donate, give away, or throw out clothes and accessories which no longer fit or you no longer wear. Remove unnecessary items and avoid piling books on top of your nightstand tables.

6.  Consider your Art Choices

Choosing the wrong art, materials, and colors can disrupt the nurturing energy you need to sleep well.

Avoid wall art that make you sad or evoke negative emotions. Replace it instead with happy, beautiful images that leave you feeling calm, inspired, and good when you look at them. You want that art to inspire confidence and happiness.

In regards to the Feng Shui bedroom colors, you can go with neutral, calming skin colors. It can be everything from chocolate brown, beige, tan, to pale white.

7.  Remove mirrors from the bedroom

For a Feng Shui bedroom, avoid mirrors, especially if you’re are not sleeping well. Mirrors reflect light, and promote active energies and restlessness in the bedroom. You may experience difficulty falling asleep as you are waiting for the energies to become less active or still.

You may wish to not Feng Shui your bedroom yourself and instead, seek professional help from a Feng Shui consultant. Experienced Feng Shui consultants can help you make practical changes to your bedroom (and to any other rooms in your home) that will be inspiring, pleasant, and relaxing.

Hi, just read your article, thanks for the tips!
I am recently decluttering a lot, and my bedroom is mainly empty, except for the bed, a clothingrack (a white wooden one with my favourite clothes from white to colours…as in a 🌈), 2 symmetrical side tables and some golden curtains.
But…it is a very small room and now I have placed the 2 x 2 meter bed facing the door, which leaves me very little space to move around the bed.
I would love to place the head of the bed underneath the windows, which leaves me more space to walk around, but was wondering if this is good Feng Shui wise? To sleep with my head underneath the window?
    Thanks, much love, Carro

    • Hi Carro, glad you found our post on Feng Shui bedroom ideas helpful!

In Feng Shui, it is generally not considered good to place the head of the bed under a window. In Feng Shui, the bed is considered a very important piece of furniture, as it is where we spend a significant amount of time sleeping and recharging our energy.

Placing the bed under a window can create an imbalance in the energy flow in the room, as the head of the bed is then directly exposed to the external energy, which can be disruptive to restful sleep. In addition, it may also create a feeling of vulnerability, as people may feel that their head is exposed to the outside world.

Ideally, the head of the bed should be placed against a solid wall, which provides a sense of support and stability. If placing the bed against a solid wall is not possible, you can consider placing a sturdy headboard behind the bed to create a sense of support and stability.

It is important to note that Feng Shui is a highly personal practice, and what works for one person may not work for another. If you find that placing the head of your bed under a window feels comfortable and restful to you, then it may be okay for you to do so. Ultimately, the most important thing is to create a bedroom that feels peaceful, comfortable, and conducive to restful sleep.

I am doing a bedroom makeover. Is symmetry important when making a feng shui bedroom?

    • Yes, Having symmetry in the bedroom is good Feng Shui. Furniture placement in the bedroom is important. I NEED to have that space under the bed perfectly clear otherwise I can’t sleep. It’s the same with my desk at work or my kitchen table. I can start working or cooking until everything is where it should be. Now that I’ve read this I will also move some things around: my bed is under low exposed beams and my bedroom art is not the happiest so I’m going to bring in something that evokes happy feelings. Thanks!

    • You’re welcome! There’s an optimal place for every object to improve the energy flow in the home. Using principles of Feng Shui can help you create more happier and harmonious living spaces for optimum living and better sleep.
