There are many friends of mine who will tolerate poorer sleep in order to be near their dogs at night. My opinion is that it brings no harm during the short day nap and that night sleep is something highly relevant to humans and not equally relevant to dogs because we all know that dogs sleep for two hours or so and then they wake and want to hear if the neighbors’ baby is awake etc. Those who enjoy to have their pet to keep them warm all night should bear in mind that there is a a issue of dominance as well. I like her to comes up on the bed when I invite her up and that she gets down when I want her off. She can start getting possessive of space, you know.

    • You’re right! Many people gladly trade some sleep quality for their dog’s companionship at night. Short naps are fine, but dogs can wake frequently and disrupt a full night’s rest. Dominance can also be an issue, so it’s good to set boundaries, inviting them up and asking them down as needed. Ultimately, the choice is personal. Prioritize what leads to better sleep for both you and your pet, ensuring comfort and happiness for both of you.

This is a very insightful post! I appreciate how you balanced the pros and cons of letting a dog sleep in the bed. The emotional support aspect, especially for children or those who experience nightmares, is compelling. However, the points about sleep disruption and hygiene also make sense. I wonder, do you have any tips for training a dog to sleep in its own bed if an owner decides that sharing a bed isn’t the best option for them? It would be great to hear some effective strategies for this transition.

    • Sleeping with your dog can be great, but if sharing a bed isn’t the best option, here’s how to transition. Start by placing their bed near yours and reward them for using it. Gradually move it further away over time. Use treats and positive reinforcement to make their bed a cozy, inviting spot. Consistency is key. With patience, your dog will adjust to their new sleeping arrangement.

My dog sleeps with me in my bed. I always feel so much better knowing he’s there. He keeps me company and makes me feel safe when my husband works his night shifts.

    • As long as you are both healthy, go ahead and sleep with your dog. Co-sleeping with your dog can provide a feeling of safety and security and ease anxiety. You sleep easy through the night, knowing your pet will alert you to anything out of the ordinary.
